Toby Turns 1!

"The first year just flies by," I often say to clients when they come in for a cake smash. Parents always seem to agree with that statement as we marvel at how much has changed in 12 short months. As for me, it seems like just yesterday that I was rushed to the hospital to have my very preemie baby girl, Toby. She came into the world so small and fragile and now she's a happy, healthy, gorgeous red-headed, one-year-old. Where has the time gone? To celebrate this wonderful occasion we had the pinkest of cake smashes, as my big girl grinned out at the camera with a face covered in icing.

Toby's Shoot

Often cake smash sessions are a chance for parents to go all out with "the works," elaborate sets customized with silly props and poses. In Toby's case, I decided to let her adorable face speak for itself and opted for a more simple look. A classic white background enhanced with pink florals really made my birthday girl's smile just pop out!

I also had the added advantage of knowing this session's baby better than, well, anyone. And I knew without a doubt, that given the chance, she'd wiggle her way out of any simple sitting pose I'd put her in, so I invested in some new props that could container her securely for her shoot. I've been looking forward to her cake smash for months and have been planning ahead. On Black Friday I purchased an adorable wooden high chair and wooden crib that were escape-proof.

Of course, Toby had no problem focusing when it came to cake. She was so excited she picked the whole thing up and face-planted right into the frosting! It was so cute! We finished off the shoot with our classic baby bath, filled with fruits and flowers.

Daddy's Little Big Girl

My husband is a volunteer EMT and has always wanted to incorporate his passion for emergency medicine in one of our shoots. So we sat Toby down (a very risky move for baby-escape-artist-Houdini) down and posed her with some of his gear. Any idea of running away quickly vanished once she got a hand on his walki-talki and stethoscope! Maybe we have another budding EMT in the family!
